Mission accomplished: Alcoba on the podium at portimao

22 Nov 2020

Jeremy Alcoba’s season ends in style in Portugal, with the Spanish rider claiming his maiden Moto3 World Championship podium. With this result, he legitimises – if there was still any need – the Rookie of the Year title sealed a week ago at Valencia, and with 16 more points he finishes the year with an 11th overall place in the standings with 87 points.

A dramatic end to the weekend for Gabriel Rodrigo who wraps up a very unfortunate second half of the season. The Argentine rider, despite the crash in Q2, he had qualified in tenth place, but due to a technical problem he was forced to a pit-lane start – and to give up on any hope for a good result. His 27th place finish was the best possible result, with the #2 rider that ends the year with a 13th place overall. 167 points and a seventh place overall for Team Kömmerling Gresini Moto3 in the special classification for teams.

“My goal at the start of the season was to score my first podium and finally we were able to do so – said Alcoba -. This weekend we were always among the protagonists and I believe it’s a well-deserved podium. I could have done the same in other occasions, but this time we had something more in terms of pace. I did well in staying calm and in the last laps I wanted to capitalise on an extremely important result that bodes well for a 2021 in which I want to improve further. I would like to thank the team who helped me so much.”

“We had a good potential, but an issue stopped us in the key moment – said Rodrigo -. The engine stopped on the grid and I had to start from pit lane. I still don’t know if it was my mistake or else, but I’m still sad to be finishing a season this way. A reset is needed, and we’ll try to change the mentality for next season.”
